The Daily News

Daily News is the leading American tabloid newspaper. The News is committed to holding city, state and federal officials accountable for their actions and to informing readers of what they are doing. The News also provides readers with a variety of investigative journalism, in-depth coverage of major events and the latest celebrity gossip. The newspaper has a long history of editorial integrity and is known for its commitment to public service, particularly in the areas of crime, education and politics.

In addition to a comprehensive weekday print and online edition, the Daily News also publishes a weekend version called Sunday News. This newspaper includes many of the same stories as the weekday edition but is primarily targeted to the local readership. In 2022, Daily News estimated combined weekday and Sunday print and digital circulation was 20.9 million. This represents a decrease of 8% and 10%, respectively, from the previous year.

The New York City-based paper was founded in 1919 and is the first U.S. daily to be published in tabloid format. The newspaper reached its highest circulation in 1947, when it sold 2.4 million copies each day. During its heyday, the News was known for its sensational subject matter and a focus on high-profile stories. It delved into political wrongdoing and scandals, such as the Teapot Dome Scandal, and covered social intrigue, including the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII. The News is also credited with popularizing the term “tabloid.”

In the 20th century, the News lost its dominance of the New York tabloid market to the rival Post, but continued to be one of America’s largest and best-selling newspapers, and was a significant player in national politics. From the late 1940s through the 1960s, the News leaned Republican and espoused conservative populism, but in the 1970s, it began to shift its stance. By the 1980s, it was a moderately liberal publication and by the 1990s had developed an image as a high-minded alternative to the Post.

In the 21st century, the Daily News continues to be a major New York newspaper with a broad reach. Its website features extensive photo galleries and interactive maps, as well as a strong social media presence. The newspaper also maintains a blog, which is frequently updated with breaking news and features from around the world. Its opinion pages feature prominent columnists and guest writers, and it has a wide variety of other sections, including the Arts, Entertainment and Sports sections. The Daily News is financially independent, and its student editors, writers and contributors have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public life. In addition to the Daily News, the paper publishes a weekly supplement, WKND, and produces special issues for Yale University students each year, such as the Game Day Issue, Commencement Issue and the First Year Issue. These issues are distributed to the students of Yale, who are the primary audience for the newspaper. The Yale Daily News is the oldest college daily in the United States.
